    britains best dish

I watch with great delight the daily assortment of dishes preseted to the three judges on Britains Best Dish.

I am however slightly miffed by some of the origin of some of the dishes.

I was under the impression that the progarmme was called Britains Best Dish for a reason-the dishes should be regional & BRITISH.

In the first week the selection has included at least 2 continental dishes-a spanish dish, Paella & also a French dish, Tarte Tatin.

Where are the fantastic English dishes that are so loved by us all?

Rabbit stew, Casserole with light & fluffy dumplings, fish dishes that are so popular, traditional puddings such as Spotted ***, Apple Pie with all of its regional variations

Why call a progarmme Britains Best & then include foriegn dishes.

    Re: britains best dish

Britains Best Dish is right for the programme.  It should encompas dishes that are regularyl eaten in Britain.

At our house we eat a variety of foods from around the world and although we like some traditional British dishes we also like spicy, tasty food.

In producing these programmes, they have to cater to all tastes.  These so called foreign dishes have been adopted by the British and so have become British.  Most Brits now eat pasta, rice, exotic fruits and vegetables so it would be bad management not to include these in the programme.

I am always looking for different ways to cook, to make meals more interesting, so enjoy watching cooking programmes

    Re: britains best dish

Hi I know what you are saying.

I was a contestant on this evenings show.

I was the guy who cooked the rib of beef.

When I was contacted about going onto the show I was asked what my signiture dish was to which i replied Coriander stuffed salmon in a seafood sauce with tomato rice.

I was then told that as thats not a british dish so I shouldn't enter it.

Then they asked me what was a typical british dish so I said roast beef and yorkshire pudding so the said great go in with that.

Unfortunatly they wanted to film it on the Sunday afer I had done a BBQ for 60 people for my sisters 50th birthday in my garden. Also my neibours had a party the same night so I only had just over an hours kip befor being picked up at 6am so I was well knackerd. So thats why Jilly said I wasn't relaxed.

My contestant was a realy nice guy and had a great dish But afterwards I was told by one of the judges his pork was so raw it was still oinking.

The mistake I made was I seasonedthe beef on the meat side instead of the fat side but the pork went through as it was more contempory.

But hohum it was a great exspearienceBig Smile

    P.s please excuse my spellingWink

    Re: britains best dish

Thnak you for explaining the programme. I failed to understand why the pork won when it was undercooked. In an exam, it would be an immediate fail.

The judges are biased. The fish and chips should have won tonight. It was the best meal.

The curry looked horrible. It was not a meal I would eat - it was very fattening and laden with calories.

The dessert again was a miserable failure yet it won.

This programme is too politically correct. I will not be watching again. Disgusted.

    Re: britains best dish

    Hi

My name is Ann Potgieter and i am a contestant on wednesday 3rd october , you will be pleased to know i made a traditional british classic , cottage pie , i too am amazed at the lack of truly english dishes , and as for John Burton race he described cottage pie as not posh enough to be Britains best dish , i argued my point in my audition and oviously got through , i think it is about time tv realised that whilst it is great to see all the fancy cooking chefs do , it would be nice to have a cookery programme that shows the average unsung chefs in everyday homes cooking tea for the family etc , and giving people receipies  that anyone can have a go at ..

Although i won my round i was knocked out on the thursday ,and look forward to what the judges have to say !! i really did have a great experience ,i just think we should appreciate all our traditional fare that we can do so well

    Re: britains best dish

    Hi all.

Cottage pie is a truely great british dish and not to be confused with shepherds pie and can be fantastic if cooked rightWink And no dish is too posh, thats just snobberySad

I was a bit miffed that the pork went through as it was so under done and the judges said the black pudding stuffing was cold but as Ann said it was a great thing to do and I would do it again knowing what I know now.

And I do agree that this program is more about food policits than great british food.

    Re: britains best dish

Congratulations meatman.  Your was the best dish, the pork being uneatable.  Pity about the seasoning on the beef, but the remainder looked superb.  I am sure that I could taste it.

Ho hum, back to the beef daube for supper tonight.

    Regards to all.

    Re: britains best dish

Hi, Im'e not a cook and i love watching the show, but isn't it standard practice to wear either hair nets or some form of hat when cooking, seeing people cook with long hair all over the place would make me think twice about eating their dishes.

    Re: britains best dish

I like you also enjoy the programme and agree with your comments and would also like to add how can they name it britains best dish when there were no heats held in either scotland or northern Ireland, and yet the judges constantly refer to scottish produce in particular.

    Re: britains best dish

Yes, you have a point there.

I am on the show tonight (thursday) cooking venison badly and I won't bore you with the details. What is interesting is how many really great British dishes we do have in this Country and it makes you wonder if they can be improved, or are we cooking them in the best way already? I thought it may be a great idea to come up with one classic dish and invite receipes just for that one dish to see how they vary and then choose the outright winner. A sort of Britains best dish on a dish by dish basis. So any ideas?
