I agree. People in most European countries drink casually, they don't go out on a drinking rampage which ends up in pain and crime.

Just because the British media love to report on brits behaving badly abroad certainly dont mean other countries don't have problems with their youths abroad..We have the media here to thank partly for the bad press the British get and another factor has to be the football hooligans which I must say certainly isnt just a British problem either.

The media whether it be the British media or foreign love to report on Brits behaving badly which is why there will always be the biased view of Brits.

You don't have to drink so much, that you get to the point that you don't know what you are doing, to have fun!

I will not brand a whole county because a couple of hoodlums decided to go out make fools of themselves. This is an absolutely silly thread.

Re: brits binge drinking abroad (Mike in USA)

I don't think "just anyone" represents a cross-section of one's country really.  Here in the States Opinion of the "British" in general, are well received.  Most that I have come to know and work with find the British in many respects interesting.  We share a common bond historically of course but most people know that something like "drinking" or public drunkenss is now a good yard stick to measure the entire country on.  Hell, if that were true people who have ment me over the years would hate the USA.  We have a big movemnet in this country from the "Left" - Like to them, being American is now "uncool" - Like that's something to brag about. - Fools!  This now seems to have bled over to other nations as well "Oh, no how do we look to others"...For me, I could care less - Do what it is you do but I would not think for a second the person who has behaved poorly so to speak represents and entire Nation. - But hey, Thats just me.  If anyone judged my spelling for example, They would think the education system is non-existant...I'm just to lazy to spell & grammer check...

Interesting observation - but I think the real point is "drinking" itself....I don't drink but it seems alcohol makes a lot of people crazy like you have described.  I don't think its just the reputation of the Brits, really. I had a meeting not long ago with a few guys from Germany - Man those dudes - WOW, now they can drink!  They get loud, and go all RAMBO in the clubs. But, I don't think all the people of Germany were anymore like these guys as neither I would think all the Germans to be like Hitler. Although, they were on a nasty run there for a while turning out some pretty shady leaders...:)

Thanks z4t4 - it is always interesting to get views from other countries. However I think you may be misunderstanding what the general thrust of this thread is.

Most of us really dont care how we are viewed overseas. We are Brits, We are Scots, We are English..etc .....and we are confident in who we are and why we are.

The issue here is a cultural one of how our society works when it comes to drinking socially. If you have visited here then you will have been to a pub, and an excellent thing it is too. However we have towns which are virtual no-go area's on a Friday and Saturday night because of the herds of drunken morons looking to bottle you or stab you - that is in this country. Girls throwing up in the streets, screaming and shouting at each other etc... etc...

When these herds go off on holiday to Spain or Greece they take that mentality with them. They start fights with locals or other foreign tourists. This gives all Brits a bad name, so much so that certain resorts have even considered banning all British Tourists. There is a minority who are effectively re shaping the way this nation is viewed and it is not right.

How do you thin that sits with your normal law abiding Brit who wants to take himself and his family off on holiday?

    Re: brits binge drinking abroad

18 carat is right, if you visit anywhere you are an ambassador for your country and your actions reflect upon your nation. But the problem of drunken moronic brits abroad isn't new, I spent many years in the far east, middle east and europe, and the most cringe making experiences I had was when drunken British turned up at whatever venue I was in. The first thing you would hear would be their mouths, all vying to be the centre of attraction, as the evening wore on it would become more than just annoying especially if they saw you looking at them. It would be instant paranoia, the female usually instigating the problem with a screechy rendition of, "Warrer you starin' at pal". Followed by he who would consider himself the alpha male throwing his weight around to impress his simple minded females. The most hilarious thing I saw was on the autobahn in northern Germany, usually on those roads, if you are going along a bit slow, it's considered good manners to get out of the way of someone a bit faster. But, not if you are a Brit', as everone in Britain knows, the centre lane of a motorway is for staying in until you get to where you're going even if you only want to do fifty miles an hour and have twenty mile tail back of traffic. The Reliant Robin which I saw tootling north bound in Germany had three adult passengers, all holding a bottle and a pile of luggage on the roof, and the other motorway users were being abused for having the nerve to peep at them and flash their lights to try to get them to move into the inner lane. I pretended I was Russian, anything was better than being associated with my own race at that moment. That was only one incident in eighteen years of continuous travel, and similar to many other incidents of the self righteous Brit' on holiday, bawling on about their rights as British citizens but forgetting that we don't actually run the world any more, so when they beat up some innocent person in a foreign country and get thrown into a stinking jail, the first thing they bleat is usually, "I know my rights". Then demand, with righteous indignation to be presented to the British Consul, because they haven't seen their mother for a week. I could write for days about Brit's abroad but it just gets boring after a while, we will just have to accept that, generally we are nation of ignorant, uneducated, ill disciplined, drunken morons with no manners or morals.  J.G.

hey, not branding anyone, but brits abroad are a nightmare, other countries are used to respecting alcohol , and teenagers will always be rowdy no matter where they come from, but to see british adults wih children behave in such a yobbish way makes me ashamed to be british,  loud, obnoxious, foul language and drinking like its going out of fashion, just got back from bulgaria where the family from hell were residing in our hotel, they complained from day one that they couldnt get english food,( do macdonalds do bulgarian goulash)?    only happy when they were bladdered and the kids were causing havoc.... never heard so many efffing and jeffing...... and to top it all...... builders bums and white socks and sandals, lolSurprise  but on a serious note 4 lasses who stayed next floor to us, knocked on my door and asked could  they kip down as they had no key as one of their mates had "copped off with a local lad" and she had the key to the apartment... one lass was fast asleep in her own vomit outside  her apartment, we took them in and gave them what for the next morning, sad thing was, they were really nice girls when sober,, but what if?????

It makes you ashamed to say that you are English doesn`t it and it isn`t just abroad it is at home to, seems that morals and pride in themselves has dissapeared in alcoholic stupidity
