champalonso:
I know this is an F1 forum - fair enough - but it does seem that everyone's avoiding the real big talking points of the times and I think it's about time we acknowledged them. Let's face it, there's *** all going on in F1 right now.
I don't think it's a good thing to separate out cultural issues these days and it's a bit strange that the tragic death of Michael Jackson has been ignored (apart from by aname, bless you). Is it because people feel that we must keep religiously to the F1 subject? I don't get it, all these things are surely intertwined?
And the other big talking point for me has been dear Andy Murray. My god what a fighter! I was absolutely gutted this evening, I really thought he'd be in the final, so sad for him, but he'll be back. Too much expectation from the British media yet again.
Any thoughts?
Evening Champ,
Interesting statement, and the only one ive replied to in the last month or so I think ! Micheal Jackson for me has created much debate and also a divide amongst others, me being a member of a well known social networking site it was plain to see. I hated the man unfortunatley and was taking in most of the jokes what have been published pretty much everywere, I agree with a comment earlier in the thread stating that there are far more sensitive and interesting things going on in the world than MJ. This is only my opinion and I respect there are others who loved/liked him.
F1 just seems to be in a big mess at the moment and I cant say that I have anything to say on any of the subjects hence the lack of contribution to the forum (which stigga is over the moon about ) I have lost no drive for the sport and check all the usual sites for updates and information everyday without fail, but have no desire to drag out the old stories until something interesting happens.
Tennis I just find irritating as it corrupts the BBC of their normal shows.....I dont think polluting this forum with off topic subjects is a good idea, but again thats my opinion.
Going to be a hypocrit just for a second though, I had great interest in that engine what Stigga posted, I love anything like that, really amazes me but that, you could say is just technology which is what F1 is based on.

So glad AM got knocked out of Wimbledon tbh. Although having him in the final to get defeated would have been sweet too. Needless to say he only got this far through luck.
god, this sounds so much like me talking about another sport person we really frequently discuss on here ? not so much this year tho' except for how far from the back he is starting in each race -

Re: Are we in some kind of F1 cocoon??
You just have to be in the right place at the right time to see that there is plenty of motorsport going on including input from the world of F1.
Goodwood Festival of Speed. Imperative it never clashes with an F1 race weekend.
Of course the usual 'look what the F1 drivers drove' stories and the focus on Willaims F1 history and Audi's centenery year will cover the motorsport press pages, but for me the main feature was Taylor Earnhardt driving her late father Dales, No.3 Goodwrench - Chevy Monte Carlo alongside Rusty Wallace in his N0.2 Miller Lite. Apparently the commentary said it was the actual car Dale drove for his final victory at Talladega on 2000. For those who dont know Nascar, Taylor was always featured in the TV coverage at most races since she grew up trackside in her mothers care.

Re: Are we in some kind of F1 cocoon??
Hello folks,
I agree champ, that our sport is in a pretty poor situation right now; but I have to say I want to be optimistic. When the mists have cleared in the next month or so we'll all (hopefully) be able to see where the sports' going, but, right now, the rotund lassie's nowhere near singing yet!! Like many others on the forum, I'm keeping my eyes on the governance, accountability, transparency and business ethics - if these don't get sorted, I'm certain we'll be back in a similar situation in a very short period.
I also hope that FOTA don't forget the tenets they marched forward with recently; and make sure that the fans get some recognition and respect back from a sport that has taken billions from fans - and especially from businesses that pumped their money into the sport because they recognised F1 fans' passion - only for F1 to retreat into an uber rich corporate and glam ghetto. However, the recession has also allowed us to feel entitled to question the (in my view) obscene amounts of money being made by so few from so many and from people/countries for whom money means nothing. Hay still to be made from this angle in the next few weeks I suspect.
With all the posturing between Mosley and FOTA, the hatchet burial, Max's comeback threats etc it's little wonder most intelligent fans are wondering what in the name of the wee man is going on!! How can we maintain respect for folk at the hub of F1; one of whose most recent injudicious outbursts was to call a number of F1 teams "loonies"; and one who has today praised dictatorships, and punted Mosley to lead Britain.
"Aye, there's wiser eating grass" as my Dad says!
Anyway, I've just felt a small Teutonic Twinge - could that be a pre-race stirring - an omen about next weekend - or just incredulous indigestion, anger and embarrasment at evidence of how far Bernie and Max are (or have removed themselves) from a global sport's fanbase??

As you say, this is an F1 forum.
If I want to express a view on pop music or tennis I'll go elsewhere.
Strange that you took the trouble to reply to my silly post then.

Re: Are we in some kind of F1 cocoon??
Yes Pedekay, it makes a change from F1 politics, that is what I think I was trying to say!
As for MJ, I completely agree with justrace and others about the greater tragedy of the deaths of innocent children, sadly all too common it seems. I just think that the death of a musical icon is such a big event, and will be remembered for years to come, and it seemed like it was almost taboo to mention it on here.
It is possible to be F1 fans but not completely one-dimensional, so I don't see what the problem is with touching upon other high profile events in a F1 forum, especially when there's not much excitement going on in F1 right now. Here's hoping that will change next weekend!

Re: Are we in some kind of F1 cocoon??
pedekay:What about ELVIS !!!!!! He was THE KING !!! Also had to be said lol.
And Elvis never changed colour. That was just too sad, that MJ felt not good enough as he was. Pitiful really.
First of all, there are 10's of Jacko songs that could be played today and sound just as modern and creative for todays era, his music just doesnt age or get dated at all.
Didnt Elvis get a tan and dye his hair black? Not to mention stole material of Little Richard, chuck Berry and sent that guy who sang sweet petit to an early grave (I think) as he also took his songs which turned him insane, King my ***. I still don't think Jacko is really dead though. Saw Transformers 2 today, it was so flamming cool .

Aname, I hope you don't think I was dissing MJ, my comment about Elvis was a joking reply to a post by l12mcg. I feel sad for Jacko that he felt he had to change his appearance so much. From what is reported, he had an unhappy childhood. So many of the greats seem to be unhappy in their personal life - in my era, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland for example. Sad that such great stars couldn't be happier themselves.

nothing wrong with elvis or michael changing their appearances after all all races except the african or black race evolved out of the african or black race because people wanted those particular features and sort to mate with a mate with those features and people with the wrong features weren't lucky enough to find a mate as a result different races appeared over time. in other words selective breeding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmlZIR38x90&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2wJBiQrkh8 many enjoy a suntan, perm their hair, dye their hair or skin, where high heels to appear taller, ware wigs and make up, ware false boobs, the list goes on. mj did what he felt he had to do to achieve what he wanted to achieve. this is the reason everyone is talking about him. if he lived like the average singer, and didn't break boundaries not many would talk about him the way they are. only thing am not too keen on are the allegations.

Re: Are we in some kind of F1 cocoon??
pedekay:I was sorry about Andy Murray too, champ. It would have been great to have a British winner - or should I say Scottish lol. He is from Dunblane, and that's a town that has had more than its fair share of bad luck. Apparently Andy was actually in the school at the time of the shooting. Anything which gives the town a lift has to be good.
The Tour de France is live each day on Eurosport, justrace. It's a freeview channel - you get ads of course, but not too bad. They show quite a bit of cycling, the Giro d'Italia among others. Hubby is a great fan so I pick up a bit too.
It all makes a change from F1 politics, I guess. There's not much of interest in the racing right now.
Cheers, pdk. I have been a keen hobby cyclist myself, when I find the time I do watch the tour live on eurosport. But the daily shows on ITV are better for a catch up and the backgrounds. I didn't know that Murray was at the school at the time of the shooting. Good on the lad and the town. I am sure his time will come.

As far as I am concerned it's surely not taboo to mention anything outside F1. Just be prepared that not everybody feels alike and you might get some banter. As far as MJ is concerned, he was just too weird for my taste, at least since the earth song and all the other stories surrounding his life since. If I had any emotions for him, then it was rather pity than anything else. I think the lad could have done with a few laps as a passenger in a two seater F1 car. That might have brought him down to earth again.
