primeverse:I dont know if they should bring Cutter back...im undecided...
No doubt about it, he was sorely missed in S3 - but it depends if Dougie can be persuaded, of course.....
A lot depends on whether TPTB have 'forgiven' Dougie for leaving - it just seems to me that most of the problems of S3 were a direct result of the writers wanting to wipe Nick Cutter (and everything associated with him) out of the Primeval universe. It felt as though they were so upset with Dougie that they weren't thinking straight. They made some panicky casting decisions, a hopelessly wrong choice in the kind of character they wrote for Danny, and dropped all the thoughtful Nick Cutter-style introspection about the anomalies in favour of all-action brainlessness. It felt like they were trying to prove they didn't need DH and that the show would be better without him, and it backfired badly. Even if Dougie doesn't want to come back, they need to reintroduce some of the intelligence that was part of Cutter's story.
Hi Jay95 - sound thoughts, as ever!
As a huge Dougie fan, obviously I (and undoubtedly many other fans) would love to see DH back in the role of Nick, even if just for a guest appearance. I realise this is probably unlikely, given that it seems he left rather sooner than the powers that be would have liked, but it would be great if bygones could be bygones and he could be persuaded out of Primeval retirement...... !
Failing that, I totally agree about the direction S3 was heading - S4 desperately needs the reintroduction of the values and ideals of the first two series. Central to this is the character of Danny and his future role. If the character continues in the same vein (as "cardboard cut-out action man") with little or no development, then we are stuck in S3 Groundhog Day, and so many opportunities for improvement will be missed.
S4 is a chance for a return to greatness - I just hope the writers take note...... !
