    Re: Teacher’s Strike

hi ..raging.. i totaly agree with your views ..&  in all areas of working where a service of being provided for the public .. from police down to bus drivers .. all there  to do a job ... though pay is a concern. at least lately more than in the past few years. i fully support workers rights to strike .. when sutible working conditions are not maintained for them to do their job to their fullest ability .. teachers  &  medical staff get alot of stick from members of the public . regardless of age ..& all those workers are thee to do is provide a vital service .

teachers especialy are there to educate the next generation  & they cannot do that without sufficiant funding  & .. good working conditions . both physically & mentally .which i have to add is the duty of  local council`s .. &  also the related governement departments .. &  when those conditions are not being provided .. no one wants to strike .when they have a job to do .. but thats what workers  unions  were created for , to give these workers the rights to voice their opinions.. &  hopefully  provide a better service . for all the community  , & if getting on the picket line is the only way to do it ? then so be it .. Big Smile

I will garauntee you one thing Rosie - no-one ever became a Nurse because of the Salary!

£20K p.a is not a great deal these days but you seem to think it motivation enough for a vocation.

This is the point. Nursing is a vocation and most will choose it because they have that kind of personality, one that has a desire to help and to make a difference. Same as Teachers.

So yes they would be just as caring on £15k p.a or on £25k p.a and quite frankly you should be ashamed of yourself for even alledging any other motivation and your attempt to backtrack above just contradicts your arguments even more.

"Nursing is a vocation and most will choose it because they have that kind of personality, one that has a desire to help and to make a difference". Maybe most (though that's doubtful) but by no means all. One nurse I had the misfortune to encounter this weekend left a patient without painkillers for an hour, was 6 hours late in changing a syringe driver (loaded with morphine and anti-sickness drug) and the next day failed to change the driver at all. These syringe drivers should be changed every 24 hours and if the fluid isn't drained within 24 hours it should be noted and the syringe driver changed in any case but it seems she was more concerned with chatting to visitors who flattered her with comments like "I don't care what anyone says - nurses do a wonderful job"! Not ALL nurses! Some of them shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a hospital ward!!

I agree with your last sentence.
