In your opinion - not in the law though which is what counts.

    Re: Charity?

I'm pretty sure Cain & Charity are first cousins, she does call Zak Uncle Zak.  We have no idea who her dad actually is as his name has never been mentioned but as far as I can recall he is a brother of Zak.  But your'e right daffodilly in the eyes of the law it is not incest or illegal.  In some religions it isn't allowed and I believe if there are any inherited diseases you have to have a medical to ensure it won't be passed on to your children.  Anyway didn't it use to be quite common back in Victorian days to marry cousins (or was it further back)?

    Re: Charity?

Most of the Royal family have been married to one cousin or another, although that explains a lot!  Indifferent

Franny, the Dingle family tree lists Charity as either the daughter OR the niece of Zaks COUSIN. The genealogistSmilesays that he can't state which of the two, with complete certainty.  But the relationship is very distant.      We have a very unusual surname and the first person with that surname arrived in South Africa in 1702, sired 7 children and each child more or less carried on the pattern  -  It is an absolute certainty that everyone in Southern Africa with our surname is a member of the same family, plus ofcourse all the offshoots from the female members who married people whose surnames we don't know. Sheesh......If we're going to go with vaders interpretation of incest we were living in a minefield.  Good thing we left.

    Re: Charity?

Even first cousins can marry - as long as there is no genetic problems they can even have perfectly normal children. It's closer family ties that are taboo and personally I don't have too many problems with even that if both are consenting adults and they make sure they don't have children. I knew a couple once who were Brother/Sister but they didn't now that until they became engaged. I am guessing with the way families are splitting up and egg and sperm donation happening more and more we will see this happen more often in the future and may never even realise it is happening.

hermione, does that mean that Zak and Charity are second cousins, once removed.  And if Charity is the daughter of a cousin of Zak's cousin, what would the relationship be.  (I know I'm indulging myself here, but I spent ages at the archives in Cape Town, trying to work out my fathers large, extended family and emerged with head reeling  -  it's something that has always fascinated me)

I don't think so. If she was the daughter of Zak's cousin, the relatives that they share would be Zak's grandparents, I think, and in that case he would be her uncle, because to him they'd be grandparents, but to her they're be great-grandparents. I'm not sure if there are any removals though.

If she was the daughter of Zak's brother, then we all know that he'd be her uncle. That one is pretty simple.

If Charity was the daughter of a cousin of Zak's cousin it gets more complicated. If they were all related by blood in some way, then they would be first cousins once removed, assuming that Zak's cousin's cousin was also Zak's cousin and they were of the same generation. If the cousin's cousin was removed from Zak, then add an additional removal to the child, by they stay the same degree of cousin. It's easiest to work out if you have a family tree drawn up, because then you can see who is related to who and what generation they are!

If they weren't related by blood, then they wouldn't be related at all, technically.

I think that makes you first cousins once removed - but don't quote me because I find it very confusing !
