    ITV1; The Children

I was really looking forward to watching this because I enjoy thrillers, but did anyone else find the storyline very hard to follow?  I feel there was too many characters, and the flipping back and forth from past to present to past to present, was confuddling to say the least.  Great cast, but I am so confused; I am still not sure what the heck it's about... Is any child dead or what?  Did anyone else think 'Whaaaat?'

hi poppy, it was a bit confusing..but think we can establish that the child is dead and now we have to wait for  2 more episodes to find out who had it in for her, step brother? dads new wife?  stepdad? stepbrothers mother? or indeed the mother herself.... mmmm yes a tad confusing, but will have to stay with it now.lol

What an incredibly weak conclusion to this story. After waiting for 3 episodes to find out how the kid died, wading through numerous flashbacks, then the ending was just so poorly constructed. What started out as a novel way to tell a story turned into a complete farce in the last 10 minutes. What a waste of 3 hours of my life!! Thanks ITV.

    :-(

    Re: ITV1; The Children

I'm afraidI can't disagree with that.  I was totally engrossed in the drama for the first two episodes: the characters seemed real to me, and the dreadful emotional problems generated by the parents' behaviour really gripped me.  Then tonight, suddenly all those carefully-constructed characters and situations came crashing down to end in - WHAT?  Utter bathos.  I thought better of the writer, Lucy Gannon.

    Re: ITV1; The Children

I cannot believe that a good drama just faded at the end like this.  I thought it must have been me and I'd somehow missed a vital clue.  If it was supposed to be the baby's mother (father's partner) then she was the only one who actually hadn't been to the house.  Totally bamboozled.

I couldn't agree more............. what an utterly disappointing finish to what was a brilliant story. Why did it just end like that???? What a waste of 3 Monday's that I had made an effort to stay in and watch.

    Re: ITV1; The Children

I totally agree the ending really didn't do the programme any justice. Three hours of suspense (well sort off) & then ten minutes devoted to tying it all up! But there is one thing I really do not get and haven't seen it mentioned on any forums. When the little girl entered the garden she had to unlock the back gate (yes unusual I know - thank you Sky+) now the gate is opened and presumably the killer walked down the alley then killed her.................But the neighbour who alerted the police said she saw the little girl out of her window and couldn't get into the back garden as the door was locked the policeman then had to knock the door down to get to the little girl.....................Now it seems to me whoever killed her had a key to that back gate (the stepdad acting very strange having sex in an unused classroom etc not usually on a Headmaster's timetable!). So was the scene at the end where her stepmum is crying “sorry” etc a red herring (maybe the only one of the characters who truly wanted the little girl dead).........Of course this could all be a total load of rubbish!

    Re: ITV1; The Children

I wonder if ITV will get the author to let us all in on the secret - who was the killer? Absolutely gutted that a drama that required concentration and good recall let us down. It seems to me that author couldn't think of a good ending. Shame!
