The actor who plays Coronation Street's Gary Windass, Mikey North, has been savagely beaten up in an unprovoked attack. He was jumped as he was leaving a nightclub with his girlfriend and some friends at the weekend, and had to have surgery for serious facial injuries including a broken jaw.

There's speculation that the thugs who beat him up were taunting him about his hard-man role in Coronation Street but apparently Mikey is nothing like his on-screen character and is described as "the most unassuming lad you could meet." A 19 year old man has been arrested in connection with the attack. Mikey is recovering at home, but is in a lot of pain and it will be a while before he can return to work.

One of the users on my Corrie site joked that he must have got confused. You're not supposed to appear in Casualty until AFTER you've finished in Corrie. but it's an awful thing to have happened to the lad. It's a sad thing that there are people out there who are so thick they can't separate an actor from the character he plays.

I hope he recovers quickly and that the the people resposible get full punishment.
