    Dodgy Breeders

There have to be other people out there who are sick to the heart that nothing is being done to rid dogdom of the dodgy breeders.     There's plenty of talk, spouting good intentions, but always with an eye to checking their backs legally.  That's ok, I suppose, but they seem to be endlessly chasing their own tails and the poor dogs are still suffering.   Now I find out there's an organisation trying to rival the Kennel Club by offering to register dogs.   What's going on?   The Kennel Club is the Establishment, an institution, and, despite recent twisted TV coverage, they've been fighting an uphill battle against dodgy breeders for years.    Come on people, wake up, dogs are not disposable goods.     A dog is your companion, confidant, confessor and always a cuddle when you need one.    Dodgy breeders don't care about the homes and lifestyles being offered to their puppies, they don't see precious little lives, they count the cash as the puppies pop out.   They neither know nor care about the genetics or temperaments they are breeding.   They don't care about the lifetime of Vet's bills you're going to have.         Are you reading this because you have a story about a dodgy breeder?    Would you like to share it?   Let's speak up, open people's eyes.    Wouldn't it be an idea to set up a reliable Breeders Register, where they don't just pay money and get their pups sold for them.   Make it free, but make it hard, very hard, to get their names on.   They would have to meet strict criteria with regards to their kennel's history, bona fide reports and reccomendations from people who have bought puppies/dogs from them, Vet's commendations about their dedication to their dogs etc.      Come on, anyone interested in making a difference?

I agree with you on some points. You can buy false degrees etc on the net so its sounds very similar. With regard to the Kennel Club I don't think they are blameless, they set the standards of conformation which has resulted in the shameful distortion and congenital deformities in most breeds. However, it all boils down to money and greed. Most people neither know nor care, as long as they can get a pedigree dog "cheaper." As far as I am concerned, there are enough loving and abandoned dogs in this country  if people want a true friend without the  need to breed and sell more.

You've hit the nail on the head Packleader, the majority of breeders especially those connected with the Kennel Club are interested more in money than animal welfare (humans are not to be trusted where animals and money are concerned) can't remember who said it, but it's very true.  There are plenty of animals in rescue centres all needing people to adopt them.

Some dogs are sold through the internet at inflated prices.  Some of the people who breed these dogs have rescued them from breed rescues with conditions that they will not breed from the dog.  They are usually advertised with no kc reg . They are back room breeders.  If you want to buy a pedigree dog , make sure you have all the papers and kc reg . Cross breeds are advertised as non malting. Ie shih tzu. Mine drops hair. But if people will pay inflated prices they will continue to breed these poor animals and sell them on when they are of no more use.

    Re: Dodgy Breeders

We run our own animal rescue and have found over the past 18  months the number of unwanted puppies has quadrupled. At first it seemed just a fluke that we should get so many in such a short time but we then realised that it was due to people that had thought that as money was short ie the recession that there was easy money to be had by indiscriminate breeding of any dog not just pedigrees ( most puppies we have seen have been staffie x) the problem comes when the puppies arn't being bought by people because of the recession so they either get dumped on the street or handed into us. The problem is how do you stop this kind of breeding? legislation could be brought in to govern the pedigree dogs, and i whole heartedly agree this should be done as we have had some very dodgy dogs from some very dodgy breeders too, but not for the X breeds that Joe Bloggs on the street are breeding and even if these are fully pedigree they wont be registered.
