I don't think the result was shocking at all.
I think it is obvious that going purely from talent and nothing else, the favourites should have been Faryl and Escala, and possibly Andrew. And yes, the show is called Britain's Got Talent. But in reality that just isn't how it works. It is about talent AND how well the entrant engages with the audience. On this television show you must not only impress with your talent but
also win over the HEARTS of the audience if you are going to persuade
them that their money is well spent voting for you. They have to like the PERSON, not just the act. It is not the "sob stories" so much as Simon's "likeability factor"; he doesn't keep reiterating how important that is for nothing.
Faryl has an amazing voice but - at least from what we saw of her on the show - no personality or charisma; she has none of the shy humility of Andrew or the cheeky likeability of George which made people feel passionate about wanting them to win. Escala, as professionals, have toured and tasted some fame already (...and they never mentioned it), and in entering a show full of people like the undiscovered children, that reduced their likeability. I love what Escala do and I think they are amazing, but I didn't want to see them win.
People voted for George, Andrew and Signature because they liked them as people as well as performers. The result is completely logical to me. This country has a big heart and I would not want to see it any other way. It's also the best possible result: the musical acts will all walk away with recording contracts worth millions. The dancers can't really do that - George's act can't sell records or fill concert halls and he is the most deserving of the prize in my opinion. Whoever was your favourite, you can be sure all the finalists (and a good number of the semifinalists) are going to walk away from this rich and famous. There is no reason for anyone to be disappointed.
