I have very much enjoyed the development of Eli's character over the past four months, culminating in his lovely scenes with Laurel and Marlon earlier this week. Joe Gilgun is a good comic actor, but also a fine dramatic one when given the chance (which he rarely has been). That tearful hug between the brothers really got to me and I had high hopes for him but, alas, the writers seem to have amnesia. Last night's episode - just one day after his return - Eli's character was right back to where he was four or five months ago. It was like he'd had a personality transplant and all the feelings he expressed have now been negated - apparently even his love for, and guilt over, Debbie. He is now just going to be a buffoon made to make Cain look even better by comparison and a catalyst for the Cain/Aaron relationship to develop. What an utter waste - I have to wonder why they bothered to start developing him at all! I think Joe Gilgun should really consider moving on, lest he is still rotting in the Dales in ten years time; a mini Shadrach there to look scruffy and get up to no good.
very disappointed
