I know this is an F1 forum - fair enough - but it does seem that everyone's avoiding the real big talking points of the times and I think it's about time we acknowledged them. Let's face it, there's *** all going on in F1 right now.

I don't think it's a good thing to separate out cultural issues these days and it's a bit strange that the tragic death of Michael Jackson has been ignored (apart from by aname, bless you). Is it because people feel that we must keep religiously to the F1 subject? I don't get it, all these things are surely intertwined?

And the other big talking point for me has been dear Andy Murray. My god what a fighter! I was absolutely gutted this evening, I really thought he'd be in the final, so sad for him, but he'll be back. Too much expectation from the British media yet again.

Any thoughts?

Plenty of little arrows before the F1 part champ. Not having a go, but it is a ~~Lewis Hamilton~~ Formula One forum and there are plenty of other places/forums to discuss the other talking points. My biggest passion sports-wise is actually football, but I have RAWK for that, so I don't have the need to harp on about Torres in here, which I suspect would be about as interesting to most forum members as Andy Murray is to me. As for Michael Jackson, well I have darker views on his charachter and certainly do not mourn his passing. My point is, formula one is our common ground in here and I doubt that most of us have much else in common, so we should probably stick to that for the most part.

Too right Champ, I would eedin well talk about what I want to eedin talk about. If F1 was so dead in the water maybe I wouldnt, but it is and I can....so there.

What about Michael Jacksons memorial service, his beautiful little daughter actually made me open my eyes and finally admit he could be truly dead! That was the most special moment of the whole service and I cannot see why the family are being criticised for allowing her to speak. For all those people who wish to exaggerate on Michael, for heaven sakes I have seen his children's faces many times before that.

Don't believe that girl! My wife has convinced me that Michael lives now with Elivs - who of course is not dead either.

I was actually quite annoyed about this service. I was cooking and can only receive BBC news in the kitchen. I found what I heard and saw most pathetic, esp. Stevie Wonder. Surely MJ would have deserved better - but then again, maybe not.

Well I did watch the service and made hubby watch it too. He made the odd yawning whingey noise and I said "Look this is an important moment in cultural history!" and reminded him of how upset he was about Elvis and how he read his biography and all that. The cynical side of me would say, about the memorial, "Oh how tacky and they're using people's grief to make money for themselves", but the compassionate side of me is stronger and I find it very easy to get emotional and I like to see the best in people. I'm not the biggest MJ fan, I am primarily a music fan, but I think he made a great contribution to music - which in itself is a great contribution to humanity - as well as bringing different cultural groups together. I think he was a very talented lad, who had a very difficult childhood and even more difficult life as a successful adult, and maybe his family should have looked after him a bit better.

I probably agree with that, while still saying I found him most pathetic. The whole service for me appeared to me as people trying desperately to show even more true and deep feelings. Trying too hard, I would say.
