I have plenty of scars and a right ankle that's been stiff for years but the skating has put most things to rights.
I've thought for a while now that I needed something like skating as part of the physio after the last accident. I got exercises to loosen my toes and ankle but that was about it.

I normally sit in the stands as I get to the rink around 45 minutes before the lessons to watch the advanced skaters. It's good to see how it should be done. Shame there isn't more skating on TV. A good source of skating videos in Figure Skating Videos dot net (fsvids.net). It's a forum especially for posting Skating videos. The servers they use hold them for 30 days and some a lot more but requests will normally get a repost of one where the original link has expired.

please help!!!

i did the same about 18 weeks ago when i started i fell on my wrist and now it still gets really sore and i have to click it every morning before i can move it properly. i find it hard as well because i have bad legs anyway i have been on and off crutches since i was 10 my tendon shrinks in my left foot so i have to stretch it, i have arthritis in my knees and they dislocate and it affects my hips as well, but i dont like to let it stop me.

i was supposed to be watching their summer gala today where they have all different routines but i had the little girl i look after with me and it was a long day we would have been there from 11am-6.30pm so i couldnt stay but i was really guted i really wanted to stay and watch.

please help!!!

Having just found the date of the first lesson which was 7th May I got my maths wrong. Still the satnav does a good job and warns me of all the cameras.
Traveling time is about the same around 40 minutes each way depending on traffic.

Also one thing I've noticed is the big variation in the temperature at the rink. One week it's so cold you shiver when you walk in others it warm and you start sweating soon after starting. This also then has the problem of ice melting too easily and condensation dropping from the rafters creating holes where it lands.

Yes the backwards outside edges sound like fun ...

I've got to break the instinct of hands down as I fall ! But it normally happens so quickly that your sitting on the ice before you even know what's happening. On my first skate when I really was as they say running before I could walk I went down and jarred my shoulder and wrist. I jarred the same wrist next time and last week I stretched I think tendons is my left hand ,which was injured in my first motorbike accident 21 years ago ,and even a week later the lower joint of my thumb is a bit sore and a bit stiff first thing in the morning. Trouble is I'm not used to falling ,as I seem to have very good balance and can normally recover if I catch the picks. But as I was really trying to get the hang of the outside edge turns and with soft ice I did fall twice last time. But they say if you don't fall your not trying so I decided to try harder ,once I stop putting a hand down I wont think about going down ,which although I'm not conscious of it ,might be in the back of my mine somewhere.

please help!!!

i have had the same problem with instructors. and my one thing that i am worst at is also out side edges i hate them so much lol wait till you got to do outside edges backwards their horrible lol. but apart form those i love learning everything else. your lucky your i ce rimk is so close to you mine is about 45 mins away about 20 miles maybe a bit more it costs so much in petrol.

please help!!!

holliow:
thanks steph. xxxx

hi larry i love it too i wish i had started off a bit younger as well, how old are you if you dont mind me asking?

I'm 40.

how are you finidng 3 turns i didn't like those much im ok a t them now but i didnt like them at the time lol.

Our original remaining group haven't done 3 turns yet ,but the group we were put with 2 weeks ago have but that instructor wasn't there last week or we would have been attempting them along with backwards crossovers.

We've had three different instructors and each one does things differently and at different levels. The group we were put with ,as the numbers remaining in our group fell ,is a more advanced group. Looking at the requirements for Level 5 we have done the elements ,plus we've done two-foot slaloms ,backwards chasses around a circle ,plus the one where using the outside edge you start facing up the rink pushing off with the left skate then turning on a right-outside edge then changing over to a push with the right skate and turning on a left-outside edge and repeating until you reach the other side of the rink. I have to say that I'm having to practice outside edge turns as it's one of my weak points. And as the first three-turns is outside ones it could take some getting right.

im just finishing skate uk level 10 and then going on to the bronze, silver gold. which ice rink do you go to??? im quite lucky with mine its in cardiff i go every weekend sometimes in the week if i can but it has late nights as well. xxx

Congratulations on reaching level 10.

I skate in Milton Keynes. I'm actually mid way between Peterborough and MK but MK looks the easiest to get to and is slightly nearer from home by about 3 miles. Night skating is Mondays and Fridays 8pm till 10pm plus weekends ,wish there was a mid week one as well.

It's a rapid learning curve. When I first started lessons I'd skated twice before and as most of the others in the original group were capable of moving on the ice the different elements were piled on rather quickly. I've now had 16 30 minute lessons plus the public skating afterwards. As I've mentioned before the first assessment is the 23rd July when we find out how far we have really progressed. I love cycling as well and normally by now I'd be doing the 8 1/2 mile round trip to work each day but the weather hasn't really allowed for it on a regular basis .Cycling is good for developing the leg muscles as is Ice Skating. I've certainly noticed the difference to the cycling since skating. The terrain around here is either going up a slope or going down one with very few flat areas so you land up using most of the gears.

At this time I'd be happy to someday get to level 10 ,I haven't looked or thought beyond that.

Take care.

please help!!!

thanks steph. xxxx

hi larry i love it too i wish i had started off a bit younger as well, how old are you if you dont mind me asking? how are you finidng 3 turns i didn't like those much im ok a t them now but i didnt like them at the time lol. im just finishing skate uk level 10 and then going on to the bronze, silver gold. which ice rink do you go to??? im quite lucky with mine its in cardiff i go every weekend sometimes in the week if i can but it has late nights as well. xxx

please help!!!

holliow:
leah you haven't offended me at all. and larry im glad to hear you are able to do sports again after your accident. what type of skating do you do?

I'm not at your level but I'm learning Figure Skating. I'm around Skate UK level 6 ,we have been doing elements from 5 and 6 but the first assessment is in a couple of weeks so I'll know for certain what level I'm at.

I love skating and would love more ice time but the evening public skating during the week is only Mondays and Fridays. Friday night is disco night and I'd imagine is well packed. In fact going by last Mondays Public session after the lesson is looks like the schools in MK have stopped for the summer break as there was loads of younger kids there which isn't much fun when your trying to practice.

I wish I'd started Ice Skating years ago. I used to do Friday nights roller skating when I was in my teens but that was quite some time ago.

please help!!!

leah you haven't offended me at all. and larry im glad to hear you are able to do sports again after your accident. what type of skating do you do?

please help!!!

With extra hours of training you will be given you will lose weight without having to change your diet. In fact you'll probably have to increase you intake to maintain a sufficient energy level.
Everybody is different ,some can eat what every they want without putting on weight ,others are the opposite. When I was at my most active I was under 10st which at 6ft is well under weight. With inactivity following a Motorbike crash I put on most than 2 1/2 stone which didn't want to come off without changing my eating habits.
Now I'm back to doing sporting things again ,including Ice Skating ,I'm below 11st and am comfortable with it. All the developed muscles are in the right place for the sports I'm doing and as the level of activity goes up I'll will increase my intake to prevent too much weight coming off.

Honestly it's not just a case of losing weight when you are doing high energy sports. You have to have a well balance diet so that you have the right combination that won't hinder what your doing. The fact that they want you to go on to do competition training is excellent and you must have worked hard to get to this level so it's important that you have a well balance diet as it would be a shame to destroy what you have already achieved .Most people can only dream of competing.

A sports dietitian can advise you on a healthy plan to help you along the way and the increased training will do the rest.

please help!!!

hi fluffy bunny i understand what you mean but its not that im not listening i appriciate everything that everyone has said but my please help was for help to lose the weight not to put me off the idea. although i know that people are only suggesting because they are worried but i want to lose the weight and was looking for help on how to do that.
