"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: Introduce 'Compulsory
     Dog licencing and microchipping'.

The new Animal welfare Act has sadly failed to reduce or
control the increasing numbers of pets that are dumped and
abandoned. We have become a throw away society with animals
increasingly becoming objects of cruelty and abandonment. The
credit crunch has become the ideal excuse to discard peoples`
unwanted pets but in reality has little to no truth as cutting
down on a few small personal luxuries would easily cover any
increased pet bills. Traceability and accountability are key in
addressing the increased abuse of our beloved animals and with
charities facing a bleak financial future the outlook for
abandoned animals is very grim. Simply licence and register ALL
dog / cat owners to help reduce impulse purchases and ease in
which these animals can be tossed aside.

A similar petition has only obtained 20 signatures which highlights to causes.

Is it simply that our so called animal loving population have no interest in seeing their pets indentifiable and traceable if lost or do not feel that they are worth a little monitary imput to make all animals protected under a registration scheme.

Or is it that the public are just not aware ?.

Why is such a simple cost effective scheme not supported by the Animal Welfare charities, such as the RSPCA who constantly fill our media with statements claiming they are over crowded with abandoned and " lost animals " and calling for more money from the public to help address this serious growing problem.

Where are the media who are very quick to highlight animal cruelty stories and the MP`s that fill Parliament when animal issues such as the hunting ban is debated ?.

To myself, someone that has dedicated over 45 years to animal welfare it seems that with leaving serious issues pertaining to animal welfare such as. a} Addressing the issue of fireworks which kills, maims and terrifies thousands of animals each year, all of which is well documented yet ignored.

b} Making pet owners accountable, responsible and traceable for their animals thus reducing the all too high numbers of abandoned, unwanted and abused pets.

The recession is a poor excuse for the increased numbers of abandoned pets and is being used all too freely as some form of justiiable reasoning for this callous act. The truth is all too simple, pets are too easily obtained and with this throw away society all too easily disposed of with at present little to no traceability or accountability.

Without cruelty and abandonment perhaps there would be no real need for so many animal charities and are some concerned that they would become extinct. The new Animal Welfare Act has failed in certain areas and unless with secondary legislation seeing the issues such as fireworks and animal abuse and abandonment dealt with nothing will improve.

All too much of the animal welfare legislation is made by "SELECTIVE" animal rights agendas and public opinion, entertainment and revenue appear far more important than actually improving animal welfare.

Honey Itsadogslife!

Woof Woof!!! big doggy licks to you all!!! Well, my name is Honey and I am a rescue dog from a small village named Arambol in Goa, India. I was found as a pup by my owners who were living out there at the time. There are many homeless dogs in Goa and I was one of them. Life as street dog is very tough over there. We generally hang around in packs and stick to our own territories. If a dog that is not from your pack sets one paw on your territory, they are in for it! Dreadful things can happen to dogs in Goa and for us female dogs it can be even harder. People do not want to know us because we end up having litter after litter of pups and this is not good because it makes the dog problem in Goa a constant increase. There was no hope for me - but I was one of the lucky ones. When my owners travelled back to England, they made a journey straight back to Goa to fly me over to England and spend the rest of my life with them! It was a huge adventure, with lots of tears along the way. I hope that my story will inspire even more people to give a warm and loving home to a dog in need and help them know that there are people out there that they can trust and love just as much as I do of my owners.

You can read about my journey on my website at: www.honey-itsadogslife.com

You can visit me on Facebook and become a fan of Honey Itsadogslife

You can twitter me at Dogtwitting

Big doggy licks to all you dog lovers!!!!!

                                                                                   Honey x x x

Welcome to the Dog Rescue Forum

Share your thoughts

After having seen the news bullitin last Thursday (20-11-08) we couldn't help but think about the poor greyhounds being abandoned through no fault of their own.

We promptly contacted the Retired Greyhound Trust in Waltham Abbey and went and saw for ourselves the many many dogs they had.

After 2 days we eventually adopted a beautiful fawn dog called Fudge who has now been with us for 3 days and he has proved to be the best pet we have ever had.

He has hardly needed any training with regards to toilet etc and is brilliant on a lead. He is so affectionate and adores being with people.

I would highly recommend anyone taking on one of these poor dogs and are seriously considering taking another one.

We lost our previous dog three weeks ago after having had her for 10 years and I swore I would never get another dog again.. I am so glad I changed my mind and Fudge is very much now part of the family.

It is a totaly myth that they need loads of exercise - 2 20 minute walks a day is more than enough for them and as long as they know you are there for them I cannot recommend them enough.

Thank you ITV for showing that article and thank you to Johanna and all her team who do a wonderful job looking after these beautiful docile creatures.

Anyone who reads this should check out the rescue centre and take a look - you will be guaranteed a warm welcome by dogs and humans alike and I bet you end up taking one home with you.

But the issue here is that she has from the word go been a Chaser with a capital C.

Sheep, leaves, balls and to my great alarm cars which for the first few months of her training was the major focus and she has come on fantastically.I still dont feel she can be trusted around cars and keep a very firm hold on a short lead, and my eyes peeled for any sign of a chase, but she now mostly goes down when a car comes our way and does not pull me onto busy roads aiming straight for the wheels .believe me she can pull.

however living in a livestock area means that so long as there is the possibility she may chase sheep letting her off the lead could well get her shot.Of course we do go to sheepless places, and these are not easy to find round here where she can run to her hearts content whilst i scan the horizon for sheep appearing.

my question is if a dog with such a strong working instinct can be happy as a pet. would i be working for the rest of her life to curb this behaviour, and be going against her nature. would training to not chase sheep and playing lots of chase the ball be a satisfactory alternative for both canine and human parties,or will she be unsatisfied and unbalanced?

Please if you have a view,or experience on this matter do respond because i am seriously considering finding a crofting home for her where i hope she would be able to flourish.

she gets lots and lots of exercise, and seems to be happy with me.

WRONG! Dogs are, like humans, omnivores and can quite happily exist on a vegetarian diet, as demonstarted by my 7 year old rescue dog, Jack. The vet compliments me on his condition when he goes for his annual check up. When he was rescued at 3 years of age, he had barely any hair and was painfully thin, because he suffers from colitis. I was told to feed him on a very expensive well known brand of dog food, but being vegetarian thought I would try a vegetarian food for dogs with delicate digestions which was much cheaper and he has never looked back. A friend with a rescue collie was advised to cut down on his protein intake so thought she would try my food, but was surprised to find that it actually had a higher protein content than the food she was using. There are at least two companies supplying vegetarian dog food on the internet.

Never have i been worried about the safety of him until the last couple of years, More & more people where i live are getting dogs for the purpose of using them as attack dogs or simply can't control them! On many occasions i have heard of people who have encountered such dogs. My dog & i have experienced numerous aggressive meetings of such types of dogs! one time with my dog needing medical attention! What i want to put to 'the powers that be' is all dogs should be chipped by law. When a dog is found not only can it be returned to the owner, & if a dog has been involved in aggressive behaviour it can be logged by the dog warden or police with the appropriate equipment!! I do not want to condemn any dog but to promote responsible ownership! You have a animal who can be your best pal or your worst enemy if you do not know how to control & love your dog! All cars can to be traced to their owner, why not all dogs by law??? In extreme cases its the dog who pays with its life! If people do not control their animals behaviour & let the animal control them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

disabled dogs

wanted any disabled unwanted dog any condition to live with me and my other disabled dogs

Mt name is Andrea, Im 26 years old and have been working in the Finanical Services Industry for almost 6 years where I am currentIy a Contact Centre Team Manager. I have very recently made the decision of changing my career in Financial Services to start working in the field of Animal Care. Its something I have always wanted to do and now I have made up my mind for certain I need all the help I can get to start working within the field.

Has anyone got any contacts within the West Midlands area, or does anyone from the West Midlands area, already working within the field, have any information or advice on how I start to pursue my dream job?

Im really keen to do some voluntary work within the area to start building up experience of working and handling animals. Im looking for experience within any of the following:

Dog Grooming establishment / Dog Training establishment / Animal Hospital / Kennels / Rehoming centres / Animal Rehab centres - basically anywhere where I can get practical hands on experience of handling animals, in particular dogs, and observing experienced professionals within the field of Animal Care.

Ultimately I would love to go into Dog Grooming, Dog Training, or the role of an RSPCA Inspector and would love to be involved with any animal welfare organisations within the Midlands to help me on my way.

Please reply to this post if you have any advice, information or can offer me any voluntary roles as mentioned above

Thanks kindly

(I live in Wolverhampton and im happy to travel anywhere in the West Midlands)

My dog

Ive had my dog Tommy for 2yrs now, I got him at dogs trust Canterbury.
