Absolutely agree with you, Alastair Darling has gone some way to ensuring that they are passed, certainly by those banks that they now have (or we have) a sharehold in.

All we can do with the others is name and shame them

I agree. It is a global problem, but when the Bank of England tries to ease the situation by reducing the bank rate and certain banks (e.g. Alliance & Leicester) decides to ignore and keep their standard variable rate the same, how does this help the ordinary mortgage paying customer - those same customers who have made a mint for A&L?

Greedy banks should be leaned on heavily by the Government to help their customers.

What is it you want them to do? Or are you just throwing stones at them with no workable alternatives?

Look the Government have already garuanteed your savings in the bank. They bailed out Northern Rock and garuanteed any deposits in there, so much so that NR are now the most popular bank to open a new account with.

When HBOS were going to the wall did our government panic? did they do what the yanks did and chuck taxpayers money at them? No. They let private enterprise sort it out themselves and relaxed some monopoly rules so LTSB could buy them over. Did not cost the taxpayer a penny.

I wish people would wake up and realise this is a global problem and the UK is a tiny part of it. We are keeping our heads above water and that is all you can do until the macro economic situation gets better. All this Brown / Darling bashing is an easy option, they are capable men doing their best so get a grip and stop this pathetic gnashing of teeth.

well we are still talking about it,I wonder how long its going to be with us,previously I blamed the british goverment for the mess we are in,then was corrected by someone telling me its the yanks fault.ok i agree it was origanaly,but whats the goverment going to do to help us,the british tax payer i mean,,well how about tax payers money being put into failing banks does that help,i wonder,but dont think so,have the goverment reduced the amount of tax they put on things,no they have not,,so what are they going to do to help the british public...i think NOTHING ..I think I may be right....could somebody please tell the prime minister,,,he seems to be asleep...wake up Gordon ....
