    The Mersey Sound

What a superb programme! I grew up in Liverpool in the sixties and this brought back so many memories - as well as giving me insights into things I knew less about. For example, although I've read Brian Patten's poetry for years, I never knew much about the man. He was so gentle and charming with that soft Liverpool voice.

I was a pupil at a convent school while the Mersey Sound was at its height. I'd have been in Lower 6 in 1967 and I well remember going to lots of poetry readings during the day, in our uniform and often accompanied by nuns, who surprisingly were pretty keen on the Liverpool poets.

I've been an English and Drama teacher for 20 odd years - recently retired - and it's often struck me how education, especially arts education has become narrower and dominated by exams and things you can measure - supposedly. What a crime! I've always loved writing and I'm now doing more of it. Those poems have stood the test of time - intelligent, sharp, direct and funny.

     Thanks to all concerned.
