    Tonight: Living Without Money

Honestly, what a complete waste of time.

Who the hell invented the LETS system? Exchanging work done for credits? Sorry, we've done that before - it's called money.

Further to this was the busking. Eleven pounds was collected - am I mssing something from the title of the programme?

A reverse charge of a phone call? Money is involved again - it's just someone else paying for it.

This smacked of pretending to be homeless whilst still sponging off a financial system. A very poor effort.

What about those fantastic swapping clothes experts? That is a brilliant idea for people who still want to look good but cannot afford it anymore. Long Live the charity shops, getting a bargain and helping give some back to charity. Win Win

Yes but what about those amazing swapping clothes experts who are showing the nation how to dress for less and help charity shops in the process? The Hollywood Look For Less is a great idea if you want to still shop and look good but have no budget. We should all be doing it in reality instead of filling landfill sites.

Yes, you can live without money if you want to go back to the dark ages.   Money is just a form of barter, same as lets and all the other ideas of swopping work for work or goods.   During WW11 we had a thing called 'make do and mend', it was very ingenious in many ways and much was the rebirth of old ideas.   Old material, dresses, curtains and the like, cut into shapes and sewn together to make a quilts, a very old art.   Unravelling old wollenens and reknitting them and making toys out of scraps of wood, leather and tin.   Yes, it is possible to live without mony but it is hard, the meals can be somewhat boring and there is no need.

john e: Living without money would take us into the Dark Ages? We have wars and famine in the name of power and wealth, and this is considerd an enlightened society? We have homeless on the streets when we spend billions on wars nobody wants? Money seems to have put us into the Dark Ages already.

Money is another form of barter? So what you're saying is that LETS is just another form of currency? Why not stick with what already exists? Here's a thought: wonder how HMRC feel about that?

'Make Do And Mend' (as you pointed out) has been around for a long time, it's just an alternative name to recycling. It seems somewhat ironic to me that those with money have little concept of value. I agree that it is a great idea to make use of something that nobody else wants, but it certainly isn't a hard life - we've just had it too easy.

You are so right. We have all been living on credit which has now run out.

Remember that if you have a penny left after paying all your bills, then you are rich.   If you are a penny short then you are poor.   Money is just a form of bater, save money and you save work.

The concept is good in theory but would you really be happy letting a homeless person who you didnt know sleep in your house overnight?

Eating that biscuit off the floor was the pits.    That singer friend of Jonathan's had a really good voice.

The truth is it is impossible to live totally without money but you are right we could all cut corners and only spend what we have on what we need, not want. You cannot buy a life at Harrods, only stuff that can go in to life!

    Re: Tonight: Living Without Money

Continuing the theme of trying to survive without money and using the financial system, I feel this could link to the publics perception of using the compensation network

The compensation culture is a difficult argument. Of course there are those with genuine cases, but then there are some claims which you question.

An example of this is an article I read on injury compensation  on http://www.accidentsdirect.com/personal-injury.aspx A boy won over £1,000 after he hurt himself trying a shoe on in a sports shop.

Is this an exploitation of the system, or am I off on the wrong foot?

    Re: Tonight: Living Without Money

Another way to live without money is to bike everywhere, but this has its own problems...

It appears that the credit crunch has a lot to answer for. Not only is it creating gloom on the UK economy but it has also contributed to an increase in accident claims. In a bid to keep fit, save money and help the environment, many workers have turned to cycling.

A good idea in theory, but in practice it has already began to create problems with drivers. We all know that there is an ongoing feud with the motorists’ vs. the biker but new issues are now starting to fuel the fire.

Road accidents have apparently gone up because of inexperienced cyclists, who are crashing into cars, curbs and generally being ‘ignorant of basic road rules’ quoted by an insurance company. With the new lane opened in London for cyclists too, it isn’t looking good for the helmet wearing folk.
