It was most definitely a soprano sax. Here's a pretty picture showing many of the members of the saxaphone family. The soprano sax is second, is a straight sax (although curved soprano saxes are made) and is played through a single reed attached by a ligature to the black mouthpiece.
The english horn/cor anglais is completely different in terms of looks (wooden, usually black, bulbous bell and has a curved crook besides different key systems etc.) and is played through a double reed. Basically a large oboe. Sounds completely different. PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
