are you ok? did they not all score points and championships in their eras? nothing is mentioned about their driving style or speed. simply their success.

Humpy is spot on. Do yourself a huge favour and read up on the early days of F1. It was quite common for drivers to give their car to their team mate or drivers to swap teams midway through championships. Totally, totally different.

do the facts that Fangio won five world championships almost in a different car every year, Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati or Mercedes, didn't start his f1 career until the age of 39 and won 24 out of 52 races make him the most successful driver of all time?

Due to the fact of each driver racing successfully in two different era's, I would say each was the best in their own era, unless someone builds a time machine, and gets Fangio and Schumacher to race together in Fangio's era and Schumachers era and see's who comes up on top, we would never know. But I suspect Fangio would beat Schumacher in his era, and Schumacher would beat Fangio in his era!

Re: is the most successful f1 driver schumacher or fangio?
there where often as few as 10 races in a championship back in the 50s aswell. having said that they often drove on longer more dangerous circuits in far more dangerous cars and conditions and for longer peiods (3 hour races where common). I think its impossible to make the comparison, I always just think that the best would always be the best no matter what era you put them in. Its about talent but also the ability to focus that talent in the right way and also to have enough about you to get good people and the best teams around you, its a combination of different things. It isnt enough to be a brilliant driver (Gilles Villeneuve or Ronnie Peterson for example) youve got to nurture that talent and be able to work very hard to constantly try to improve it and I guess to never really be satisfied with the level you're at. I think thats the common thread you will find between all the multiple champions - the work ethic behind the talent.

Re: is the most successful f1 driver schumacher or fangio?
When you look at it like that I can see where you're coming from, and I think you're probably right. The cars were much more dangerous and difficult to drive in the fifties than they are now. Make a mistake then and you'd probably be dead or seriously injured. I consider at least one of Schumacher's titles to be highly dubious and another to be just wrong. So for me personally he hasn't won any more titles than Fangio. There's also no way you'd get Schumacher into a leather skull cap, flying goggles, a mechanics overalls, and a car with little or no safety features and for that alone Fangio has my admiration and is a clear winner.

Aveli, you really can't compare eras. Fangio drove at a time when team orders were accepted as the right thing to do and if his own car broke down his team mate would be called in and had to give his car to Fangio in the middle of a race. There were also many championship races that not all the drivers entered and the Indianapolis 500 counted for the championship in those days. Very few F1 drivers ever entered it so in the history of the WDC you have drivers who only raced at Indy listed as GP winners.
Michael was asked this very question many times in interviews and refused to compare his success with Fangio's and also stated he had huge respect for the drivers of that era.
Another thing Fangio was good at was moving to the team with the best car, unlike MS who moved to a Ferrari team that could not win and built a championship winning team.
If you are going to go down the percentage route anyway it would depend which statistic you chose. You have chosen championship wins. How about percentage race wins or podium places or fastest laps or pole positions.

Though it is impossible to judge, like Franger said in a post before yours, Fangio moved to team to team for the best car, Michael stuck it out in Ferrari and brought along so many changes to stablise the teams competitiveness. I just do not appreciate drivers who hop in the best cars for a win, no matter how much safety or danger was about.
I think both drivers seem to have their positives and negatives aspects, Schumacher appears to have more negatives but that was only because he was the ultimate aggtressive winner, but we couldnt even begin to compare. You guys might have your favourites, but in terms of the best, all I can say is, for their era they were the best.

Re: is the most successful f1 driver schumacher or fangio?
Of course Schumacher is the most successful. He won most trophies. The question can be re-phrased to make Fangio the winner, like who is on average most successful, or who won most in the shortest time. There are also the other posts who say it was not fair, blah, blah. Well, again, that is not the question.
As it stands Schumacher was more successful, there is no arguing about it.

I agree JT. And in the light of the most recent revelations concerning Flavio, one has to wonder how many of his [MS] wins were influenced by covert rule bending! Was MS influenced to the extent that he became to believe he had to win at any cost and with whatever help he could get, or did he always lack the ability to lose gracefully?
